Off to Raleigh NC tomorrow for the Mid South meeting. I always enjoy getting together for this regional meeting of restoration and cleaning contractors. The topics are always relevant to where we are in out daily business. I always come home with some new thought or idea on how to make my business a better place to work or a technique to make a process better. All in all the Mid South is a great organization to belong to.

We have all seen the Insurance Companies ploys to get you to buy there policies (Nation Pam, Like a Good neighbor, The Red Umbrella, etc.)  Well who do you go with?  I have State Farm but I have never needed there services so I don’t know if they are the best.  Much like most of you who have never experienced a disaster that would call for your insurance companies services.  I do see every day from the outside looking in how claims are handled from the State Farms, All State’s, Farm Bureau, Travelers, USAA, Kemper, Etc.  For the most part I have been able to work with all of these carriers and satisfy the home owner (# 1 goal).  I will give some steps that will let you know if your claim is going the way a INSURANCE CLAIM should go.  1.Once you have called your local insurance agent/ carrier they will tell you depending on the claim to call a restoration company like FIRST RESTORATION SERVICES WNC to come to your home 24/7 and secure your property from further damage .  2. Adjuster has notified you with in 24-48 hours of your call to report the claim.  3.  Restoration Contractor gives you updates on the progress during the mitigation phase and during the repair phase as well to keep the home owner fully involved.  4. Communication from the adjuster to the contractor is important b/c once the work is complete the contractor is looking for approval from the adjuster of the bills presented to him once approved the checks should go to the home owner and then the contractor will invoice. 5.  If the Insurance company will not communicate with the Restoration Contractor this will put the Home Owner in a bad spot especially when it comes down to payment.  So when shopping for Insurance maybe call around to local agents and see how involved they are,  talk to some of there insured that have had the terrible experience of a disaster and see how the claim was handled by adjuster and Insurance company. Again know who is on your side, check your good neighbors background , check your red umbrella for holes, and please never go with the coolest or the cheapest.
