Since we have had such a warm February, it has given me the itch to start my spring cleaning early this year! This is the time of year we all get the itch (or feel like we should) to do some spring cleaning around our homes. This year, as you clean out each room and closet, we encourage you to do some documenting of your particularly costly or meaningful contents. If you later have damage to your home affecting these contents, you will be happy that you have these pictures when trying to settle your claim. It will also allow you to help us restore your contents to their previous condition. As always, we encourage you to review the value of the items in your home to ensure that you have sufficient coverage if the unimaginable happens.

Happy Cleaning!

This past weekend we hosted the MSPCA here in Asheville. Companies from NC SC VA GA came to hear David Kilpatrick speak on engaging our employees. He came to us from CTC Group ( Consulting Training and Coaching ). We also heard from Mike Sowinski from CFO Consultants. Mike gave a two hour presentation on How to Buy and Sell a Business.
Friday evening the group toured our contents cleaning facility, then we all went out to dinner.
I say all that to say this. You need to be connected to your peers. You can learn so much from networking with fellow owners of companies like your own. The information is valuable and real time.

We sponsored a hole at the AHBA 2011 Golf Tournament.  There were a lot of good golfers out there (drivers anyway).  We gave away a sleeve of golf balls for the worst shot from each team.  It was a good event.  It is important to First Restoration Services to give back and support our local associations.

Have you ever went on the internet looking for a car to purchase?  You fill out all the search fields to find your perfect car and press the enter button.  Isn’t it very frustrating when you get a list of cars that all look the same?  In the lower right hand corner you notice a couple words “stock photo”.  I skip right past those cars because I want to know exactly what I’m getting into.

The same goes when you’re searching for an experienced restoration company that can handle your loss from start to finish.  What does this image tell you about a restoration company?  Follow us on facebook to see real pictures from our most recent projects.

This time of year at First Restoration, we are preparing for the winter which is our busiest season. The season usually begins with fire and smoke losses which are brought on by chimneys being used for the first time of the year that malfunction or puff backs from furnaces being cranked on for the winter. We are currently processing a substantial amount of contents from these sort of losses.

Next, our eyes turn to the cold temperatures of the winter as we anticipate that frozen pipes will eventually come causing burst pipes and sprinkler system malfunctions. When this happens, we can often predict it. These calls often come in a flurry within a few days of each other. In these situations, we plan to have as many people on call as possible and often times, all of our technicians are working long days and hours to help people with damage in their homes and to keep the businesses, churches, and offices of Asheville, Hendersonville, Brevard, and other surrounding areas functioning during this busy time of year.

Although we are busy with a number of current jobs, you will find our managers and office staff planning and preparing for the winter so that we can be ready to efficiently and effectively help with disasters in Western North Carolina.

Recently, while in the doctor’s office, I was reading a Time Magazine article with the subject of “Third Hand Smoke.”  The article was on the findings of a Professor of Pediatrics at Harvard Medical School on the affects third hand cigarette smoke. The simplest definition of smoke is the byproduct of incomplete combustion.  So, first hand is direct inhalation from the cigarette, second hand is inhalation of cigarette smoke of another smoker, and third hand smoke is the residue and chemicals left behind from smoking in hair, clothing, carpet, or other porous surfaces.  The article warned that stepping outside for a moment alone with a cigarette wasn’t enough when children, pregnant women, or people with weak immune systems occupy a building.  I remember when I was in elementary school, this one particular classmate would come in reeking of cigarette smoke.  Obviously, he wasn’t smoking, but someone else was.  It is sad that this goes on.  I haven’t experienced it that much recently because the knowledge and education is more available and as many people are not smoking.  I have heard of newborn home cleanings to remove hazardous chemicals and residues from homes before bringing babies home and now it is being proven that this is a legitimate need.
